Wherever you buy and whatever you collect, always be sure to insist on the utmost proof of provenance. A certificate of authenticity should always outline the background to the particular piece and also carry the name, address, telephone and possibly email addres of the supplier.

Remember, although traditionally they are not favoured so much with serious collectors, inscribed items are rarely forged. Who would fake something to a particular named person? Documents like cheques and letters usually include a genuine signature, so naturally are always popular.

Finally ask yourself would you buy a racehorse or a dog without a pedigree? Or a car, or a house, without a service history? Always be sensible and tread with caution particularly with autographs.

VALUATION GUIDELINES: I am not a qualified auctioneer, but the best advice I can give is; go to the specialist auction house. Find out who is the most vibrant and innovative player in your field. Generally get at least two opinions and where possible get valuation guidelines in writing. Always know your subject - research is key and a good way to beat the dealer.
